WWF Kenya Country Office CBNRM / Social Development Advisor Job Vacancy

CBNRM / Social Development Advisor

To be based in Nairobi, Kenya

Under the supervision of the Conservation Manager, the Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) / Social Development Programme Advisor shall develop and implement the CBNRM/ Social Development Programme at the WWF Kenya Country Office (KCO), and be responsible for mainstreaming of CBNRM / social development principles into the KCO conservation programme, including providing guidance on social development dimensions of the KCO conservation programmes and initiatives.

Major duties will include but not limited to:

Develop and implement the WWF KCO programme for promoting CBNRM / social development in conservation in Kenya, in close collaboration with KCO conservation staff and management and building upon the existing CBNRM activities;
Identify and foster partnerships with other organizations on CBNRM / social development, work with all stakeholders to promote equitable and sustainable natural resource management -specifically CBNRM and social development in conservation;
Coordinate and promote KCO linkages to other national and to regional CBNRM initiatives and use experiences from other initiatives to inform CBNRM / social development initiatives at KCO;
Identify existing tools and materials on social development and CBNRM which can be used in the Kenya context, adapt them for local use, and where necessary, develop new tools and materials for WWF use as well as for WWF’s partners;
Document and share experiences and lessons learned in KCO CBNRM / social development activities with other national and regional initiatives, to support the development, innovation and evolution of CBNRM and social development in conservation in the region.

The applicant must possess

at least a Master’s degree in Social Sciences, Development Studies and / or Natural Resources Management;
At least eight years relevant experience in natural resource management with a focus on social development issues and community based development.
Experience working with large-scale programmes and organisations on community based natural resource development initiatives;
Ability to understand and communicate the linkages (positive and negative) between natural resource management and social development;
Excellent public relations, communication and diplomatic skills;
Strong planning and analytical skills;
Strong capacity and ability to work independently;
Ability to work within a multidisciplinary and multicultural team;
Good command of the English language, written and verbal;
Ability to work under tight deadlines, and high pressure situations;
adherence to WWF’s values, which are: Optimistic, Engaging, Determined and Knowledgeable.

Scope of Work

The purpose of this consultancy is to support UNICEF Kenya office to undertake all the preparatory activities for conducting a review and repositioning of strategies for monitoring results– this will include undertaking desk review of available literature, bottleneck analysis of identified priority issues, development of a consolidated report and work plan for all programme sectors outlining a consolidated framework for monitoring results for equity within the Kenya country programme.

The consultant will build on the findings and recommendations of background notes from self-assessments already completed that provide an understanding on the scope and nature of deprivations, and will work closely work with an office reference group, with sectoral teams, and gender, rights and emergency focal points.

The Strengthening Health Outcomes through the Private Sector (SHOPS) project is USAID's flagship project in private sector health.

It works to involve nongovernmental organizations and for-profit entities in addressing the many health needs of people in developing countries.

Abt Associates is seeking to hire a Technical Specialist (Chief of Party) to manage and lead its activities for SHOPS/Kenya.

A Technical Specialist at this level has direct project management responsibility for a project (or one or several component(s) of a large project) that is large, highly complex, highly visible, and well-funded.

The TS has an expert role and the technical input is crucial to the project.

This is a supervisory position.

General Job Description:

As a recognized expert in the professional field, performs important and complex analytical, evaluative, and consultative work.

Development and implementation of the project/project component’s technical aspects.
Management, and ongoing assessment of the project/project component’s technical aspects. Advises changes and improvements to Project Director and takes responsibility for implementation.
Can serve as a Technical Advisor to the Project Director and other Technical Specialists to provide research, analysis, and advisory services on project planning, implementation, training, monitoring and/or evaluation.
Supervisory responsibility over a unit consisting of two or more staff members in situations where the role is operational. But if the main role is an advisory role the supervisory role is not necessary.
If the main role is primarily an advisory role, the incumbent collaborates at the highest levels of the government and serves as principal project advisor in identifying and networking with key stakeholders. Nationally recognized expert in the field and the use of the expertise is crucial to project success.
