Grants Assistant, APHIAplus Project Job in Kenya - PATH

Job Description


PATH is an international nonprofit organization that creates sustainable, culturally relevant solutions, enabling communities worldwide to break longstanding cycles of poor health.

PATH’s mission is to improve the health of people around the world by advancing technologies, strengthening systems, and encouraging healthy behaviors.

USAID awarded a comprehensive health service delivery project to PATH to improve the health of Kenyans in the western region of the country.

The project, APHIAplus, builds upon USAID/Kenya’s country-wide health service support project known as the AIDS, Population and Health Integrated Assistance II (APHIA II).

PATH and its partners will implement the APHIAplus project in Western and Nyanza Provinces from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015.


It will work closely with the Government of Kenya and a wide variety of non-government agencies to strengthen health care services throughout the two provinces.

In addition to addressing specific diseases, the APHIAplus project will work on strengthening the region’s health care system by rehabilitating health facilities, training staff, and supporting supply and communication networks.

The award, valued at US$143 million, is one of several region-specific health projects that USAID/Kenya plans to award in the near future.

PATH seeks to recruit a Grants Assistant to work closely with the Grants Officer and the finance team to provide technical assistance in organizational and systems development and good governance.

The main job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Perform pre award and post award assessment of sub grants.
  • Provide information to assist in decision making on project modifications for sub grants.
  • Provide capacity building to CBOs/FBOs in strengthening HR, Admin and Finance systems to ensure proper management of funds and compliance with USAID and project rules and regulations.
  • Review sub grants financial reports for accuracy and ensure that these are adequately supported before forwarding them to the Grants Officer.
  • Ensure the sub grant monthly and quarterly financial and programmatic reports are done on time
  • Ensure strict adherence and compliance with USAID regulations by sub grants.
  • Ensure adequate supporting documentation.
  • Ensure conformity with the work plans.
  • Support the Grants Officer in orientation of new APHIA staff.
  • Maintain grant files, assist in tracking grants agreements and help team members comply with agreement policies and procedures as well as administrative requirements.
Required Skills
  • Knowledge of USAID contracts and grants technical reporting requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • High numeracy, sound technical skills and analytical approach to work.
  • Problem-solving skills and initiative.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Good time management skills and the ability to prioritize.
  • Proficiency in Ms Office applications
Required Experience
  • A degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or related field,
  • A minimum of two years relevant substantial experience implementing USAID-supported projects in contracts and grants management.
