NGO Research Internships Kenya

Raisingthe profile of research for health among young Kenyans, The Fourth NationalCall for Research Internships (2011-2012)

The Consortium for National Health Research (CNHR). This is a Kenyan nongovernmentalorganization whose mission is to contribute to the strengthening of nationalresearch for health in Kenya.

This is done by providing support for multidisciplinary research to individualsand institutions, and engaging
 
policy makers in formulation of health research policies that are evidencebased.

The Consortium also contributes to the building of networks and communities inresearch for health.
The Internship Programme;

CNHR sponsors an annual research internship exposure programme that enablesyoung graduates to make informed choice of pursuing a life-long career inresearch.

The third class of ten interns (2010-2011) successfully complete their trainingin September, 2011. CNHR will offer 10 competitive scholarships for a maximumperiod of six months (January to July, 2012). The successful interns willbenefit from close mentorship and supervision by senior researchers in variousinstitutions across the country.

Some of the selected interns will have hands-on experience in multidisciplinarysettings; others will work in laboratory/field conditions and be exposed tomodern approaches of research using sophisticated diagnostic or analyticalequipment, health systems research environment etc.

Applicants invited from medical, biomedical science and social sciencedisciplines: Applicants are invited from both public and private universities.Young doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, biomedical, social sciences,graduates who have an interest in research for health are encouraged to apply
Thematic Focus for 2011-2012

As part of the application, candidates will be required to submit an essay ofnot more than 1250 words on a topic related to the upcoming UN Summit on noncommunicablediseases (NCDs). The essays should describe approaches for StrengtheningCommunities to halt Preventable Deaths from NCDs.

Within this topic, applicants are required to identify and describe onestrategy that enables communities cope and manage the rising incidences ofcancers, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes, etc. Apanel of eminent researchers will evaluate the submissions and winning entrieswill be considered for publication.

Beyond being supported for internship, exceptionally performing candidates maybe considered for award of further training scholarships at Masters and/or PhDlevels.
Eligibility
The successful interns must satisfy the followingcriteria:
*Be Kenyan citizens;
* Be a recent (past three years) first degree graduate in any of themedical/biomedical or social sciences disciplines from a recognized university
* Have a minimum of an upper second (or credit for non-classified firstdegrees).
* Have no previous health research internship experience for a period greaterthan 3 months.
* Be not currently employed.
* Medical and allied health professionals (medical doctors, dentists, pharmacy,nurses etc) should have completed their respective professional internship
